| Viruses in the Meat Supply – Another Reason to Go Vegan! By Pamela A. Popper, Ph.D., N.D., Executive Director, The Wellness Forum Recently FDA approval was given to a company called Intralytix for a virus spray to be used on meat products. The spray is a combination of several viruses designed to kill Listeria, which causes about 2500 people to become seriously ill each year. I certainly do not want to minimize the discomfort of these 2500 people, but I am not sure that this justifies exposing hundreds of millions of other people to viruses each year. Listeria is killed by cooking, but remains a problem in meats such as deli meats, that are not heated prior to consumption. This is not the only reason not to consume foods like deli meats and a better option might be to place a warning on these foods to discourage consumption. Instead, Intralytix tested various Listeria-eating viruses, and was unable to identify one that would kill all the strains of Listeria, so it instead manufactured a cocktail of viruses for use as a spray. Studies show that the virus cocktail does work. But there are several concerns, one of which is that the FDA readily acknowledges that consumers will not know which foods have been sprayed, and there will be no disclosure requirements either in stores or restaurants. There have been no long-term studies evaluating the effect of the viruses on the immune systems in humans. It is almost impossible to believe that there will be no immune response or adverse effects, particularly to continual exposure to this product. One expected byproduct of continual use of the virus sprays will be mutation of the Listeria bacteria. What form it takes, and how resistant it will be to any form of treatment is not known. The viruses in the spray are also likely to mutate, as all viruses do. We can most likely look forward to the development of some form that will have a deleterious effect on health. There is also no assurance that the spray will only attack the Listeria bacteria and not intestinal bacteria too. There is no record of testing on this very important issue. Intralytix is now testing virus sprays for other forms of bacteria, including salmonella and E. coli, so we can anticipate that there will be more contamination of the food supply in the future, not less. This is one of the reasons that more people are choosing to consume a near-vegan or vegan diet. It’s just plain safer to do so. |
